What Is an Age Gap?
An age gap is the exact amount of time between two people's birth dates. It is a simple calendar measurement. It tells you who is older and by how much, but it says nothing about how well two people get along. People use it for couples, brothers and sisters, parents and children, classmates, colleagues and even historical figures.
This calculator shows the gap in years, months and days, and also converts it to weeks, days, hours and minutes, so you never have to switch between views.
- Exact to the day, with leap years handled correctly
- Works for two, three or four people at once
- Shows generation labels and the half-your-age-plus-seven rule
- Your dates stay in your browser and are never uploaded
How to Calculate the Age Gap by Hand
Take the later birth date and subtract the earlier one. Count complete years first, then complete months, then the days that are left over.
Example: one person is born on 14 March 1979 and another on 4 September 1981. The gap is 2 years, 5 months and 21 days, which is about 906 days or 129 weeks. Doing this by hand is easy to get wrong around leap years and short months, which is why a calculator is safer.
Average Age Gap Between Couples
In the United States the typical gap between married partners is roughly two years, and it has been shrinking for more than a century. Worldwide the gap is larger and changes a lot from region to region. In general, the gap gets smaller where women have more access to education, work and financial independence.
| Region | Typical spousal gap (approx.) |
|---|---|
| North America | 2 to 3 years |
| Europe | 2 to 3 years |
| Latin America and Caribbean | 3 to 4 years |
| Asia-Pacific | 3 to 4 years |
| Middle East and North Africa | 5 to 6 years |
| Sub-Saharan Africa | 7 to 9 years |

The "Half Your Age Plus Seven" Rule
This popular rule of thumb says the youngest socially comfortable partner is half your age plus seven, and the oldest is your age minus seven, doubled. It is a social guideline, not a science-based measure, and this calculator only shows it for adults aged 18 and over.

Does Age Gap Affect Relationships?
Research gives mixed answers. One widely cited 2014 Emory University study found that couples with larger age gaps were more likely to divorce: about 18% more for a 5-year gap and about 39% more for a 10-year gap, compared with same-age couples. The authors pointed out that shared life stages, friends and money goals often go along with similar ages.
Age gap on its own is a weak predictor for any single couple. Communication, shared values, money habits and how partners handle conflict tend to matter far more than the number of years between them.
Typical Age Gaps by Relationship
Siblings
Most brothers and sisters are 2 to 4 years apart. Gaps under a year are often called "Irish twins", and gaps over ten years usually mean a second marriage or a late child.
Parents and children
In many countries the parent-child gap is about 20 to 35 years, and grandparents are often 45 to 60 years older than grandchildren.
Work and school
Mentors, managers and teachers are commonly 5 to 30 years older. Even a few months matter in sports, where the oldest players in a year group often have an edge.
Generation Gap Reference
The calculator labels each person's generation using the widely used Pew Research birth-year ranges, so you can see if two people are in the same generation or several apart.
| Generation | Born |
|---|---|
| Gen Alpha | 2013 onward |
| Gen Z | 1997 to 2012 |
| Millennials | 1981 to 1996 |
| Gen X | 1965 to 1980 |
| Baby Boomers | 1946 to 1964 |
| Silent Generation | 1928 to 1945 |
Age Gaps Across Cultures and Religions
Marriage customs, average marriage age and gender equality all shape what a typical gap looks like. Surveys show wider average gaps in some communities and countries and much narrower ones in others. These are statistical patterns, not rules, and every couple is different. Use the calculator for facts about your own dates, and treat averages as background only.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate the age difference between two people?
Subtract the earlier date of birth from the later one, then split the result into whole years, months and days. The calculator above does this for you and accounts for leap years.
Can I compare more than two people?
Yes. Press "Add another person" to compare up to four people. Every pair is calculated, so four people produce six comparisons.
Is a 10-year age gap too big?
There is no single right answer. A 10-year gap is larger than the average, but what matters is the couple's ages, values and life goals. A gap between 20 and 30 feels different from one between 45 and 55.
What percentage of couples have the woman older?
In the US it is around 15% of opposite-sex married couples, and the share has grown as women's education and earnings have risen.
Why does the rule of seven stop at 18?
It is an adult social guideline, so the calculator does not show it if either person is under 18, and it never suggests a partner age below 18.
Are my dates stored anywhere?
No. Everything is calculated in your browser and nothing is sent to a server.
Can I share my result?
Yes. Use "Copy share link" to get a link that opens the calculator with your dates already filled in, or "Save as PDF" to print a clean report.
